Will Israel Open Gaza Crossings for Shalit Release?

Uncategorized Add comments

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported today that Ayman Taha, a member of the Hamas delegation currently negotiating truce talks in Cairo with Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, said that Tel Aviv is considering the opening of the Gaza crossings as well as releasing 1,000 prisoners in exchange for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

We see obvious problems with this idea. Israel could easily open all the borders, get Shalit back, and then close the borders again! Easy peasy.

Oh yes, surely Israel would provide guarantees… but would Hamas be able to trust them?

Unlikely.

In any case we, like many others, believe the 19 months old Gaza Siege is illegal as it amounts to collective punishment of the Gazans in violation of Geneva conventions. The violators are not only the Israelis, but also their collaborators, primarily Egypt, USA, EU and the “Quartet”.
