13 days into this shocking war, Gaza dead has reached 763 of which at least 100 women and 220 children.
Additionally there have been over 3100 injured. The numbers tend to jump during the daily 3 hour lulls. This is when the medics and aid workers can pick up dead and wounded but even then it is often fraught with danger.
Yesterday (Wedenesday, 7th January) the Red Cross (ICRC) says four Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances plus aid workers reached the Zeitun district of Gaza city where they found four live, but emaciated, children laying next to their dead mothers in a house which contained 12 bodies. They had been laying there for up to four days.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Red Cross says that despite their aid worker finding other wounded Palestinians and 3 other dead in nearby houses, Israeli soldiers ordered the rescue team to leave!
According to Pierre Wettach, head of the ICRC delegation to Israel and Palestine: “This is a shocking incident… the Israeli military must have been aware of the situation but did not assist the wounded. Neither did they make it possible for us or the Palestine Red Crescent to assist the wounded,”
Just as a reminder… The first Geneva Convention specifies that the sick and wounded must be protected and respected as long as they refrain from fighting. Furthermore those who provide assistance must not be prevented from fulfilling their task.
